Welcome to Cinema and Civics!

A brief introduction: I'm James Austin, a communications senior at KSU. I have always had a deep love for movies, I'm constantly watching them and staying up to date on movie news. The past two years specifically I have started writing reviews for every movie I watch on a movie blogging site called Letterboxd. If I want to one day make my own movies, I need to study and analyze movies to see what works and what doesn't. I enjoy writing casually about different production elements of movies I like, but I find analysis to be deeply interesting as well. 

With Cinema and Civics, I can cross over my love for writing and movies with political themes. Politics influences movies and vice versa, bringing attention to certain topics or historically reviewing something with new context. Many, many political films have been made and the purpose of this blog is to review them in hopes of uncovering new connections and themes I had not before. On one hand it's great to learn more about politics through enjoyable movies, but there's a lot to analyze and comprehend as well. I hope you enjoy my writings and that we can find some common ground with movies we enjoy!

    James,
    I too have a deep love for movies, and I hope to make movies of my own someday as well. I agree when you say "Politics influences movies and vice versa..." For instance, "The Little Mermaid" that hit theaters this past summer, stirred up a lot of opinions. There are many other examples which I know you'll cover. I'm intrigued to see what analysis you make with the movies you choose to discuss. I think choosing a passion of yours to make this project more enjoyable is a good route to take.

  This review contains spoilers. If you haven't seen Parasite, watch it ASAP!. Parasite is a true masterpiece from start to finish, so conceptually and thematically strong. Bong Joon-ho directs the hell out of a wonderful selection of actors. Each main family member gets plenty of development on their own, but when they come together, their scheming and grasping nature grows tenfold. Their infiltration of a wealthy family through every facet of their life is not the only parasite present here, though. The old housekeeper herself is a parasite in a very surprising way that creates a massive tonal shift in the middle of the movie. Split genres do wonders for the storytelling by making you quite comfortable (much like the Kim family) before throwing you for a tense loop. They Cloned Tyrone - Comedy meets social commentary in a slick Netflix original

They Cloned Tyrone is a fresh release that breaks the mold of your typical run of the mill Netflix original, a breath of fresh air for the platform. Off the bat you’ve got a setting and characters that are way different than what Netflix usually puts out, but it’s the high concept of cloning that makes this street level story so engaging. On top of that, the visuals and lighting especially look nicer than most Netflix movies that have a samey look. Very A24 inspired. If you like Sorry to Bother You, you’ll like They Cloned Tyrone. District 9: What if those we made first contact with were refugees?

    District 9 presents an interesting premise - what if the first aliens to contact us were refugees? How the world reacts and segregates them is fascinating. Neill Blomkamp presents the location of District 9 as a rundown South African slum, where these refugees experience violence daily and oppression from MNU, a local government that oversees them. Blomkamp puts a lot of effort into the culture and visual look of the Prawns, and even though the CGI for them hasn't aged perfectly, they fit perfectly into each shot. The visual effects are pretty good, and there's some awesome prosthetics as well. The story mostly follows a man obsessed with the Prawns who starts to transform into one after coming into contact with some of their chemicals. He's on the run from the MNU and gets to see firsthand how Prawns are actually treated under this government system. Plenty of ideas are presented here, but I think a whole 20 minutes or so could have been cut out of this....
